KNUT protests TSC dithering on implementation of CBA

KNUT and KUPPET addressing the press, protesting how TSC seems to hesitate to implement their CBA.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bomet Branch has protested the non-implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Branch Executive Secretary Desmond Lang’at observed that teachers are highly demoralized as their patience seems not to pay off.

Speaking in Tenwek High School, he said a signed CBA is irreversible and unstoppable hence should be implemented before any fresh talks commence.

“We are surprised that the government wants us to negotiate afresh yet we are not done with this CBA. It’s sad that officers got a pay rise yet they had not asked for it. As teachers we have been patient enough,” he noted, maintaining that teachers have a right to demand promotions and salary hikes, vowing the union will not back town in playing its role.

According to him, the current CBA was agreed upon 4 years ago hence it was wrong for TSC to use the Financial Bill as an excuse to renege.

Lang’at now wants the matter urgently addressed, saying that teachers from the region are ready to down tools should the union give a signal on the same.

“Teachers’ CBA came before the Finance Bill. In fact it came 4 years ago. Any CBA that is signed and deposited in court must be honoured. Teachers are very demoralized and are ready for anything provided they get a signal from our headquarters,” added Lang’at.

The union further appealed for concerted efforts to boost schools’ performance, stating the role is a collective duty.
