We are ready for strike if head office declares it, KNUT officials say

KNUT officials get fired up after an AGM. They said they are only waiting for the greenlight from the SG Collins Oyuu to go on strike.

KNUT grassroots officials have said they are ready for the strike that is being bandied around by several quarters should it be declared by their Secretary General Collins Oyuu.

Kipkelion KNUT Executive Secretary David Bore stated that branch officials have held meetings with teachers and are only waiting for a signal from Oyuu.

Speaking in Kericho town, Bore lashed out at the government for deliberately refusing to fulfill the last phase of the collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“As branch officials, we have held meetings with our members and they are ready like yesterday. We are only waiting for the greenlight from SG,” he noted.

He however warned against the disruption of the academic calendar as witnessed in the past, stating that the government has the ability to avert such disruptions.

According to him, the CBA was discussed and agreed upon and it was wrong to use the withdrawal of the Finance Bill as an excuse not to implement it.

“The CBA was agreed upon way before the Finance Bill was brought. Its therefore wrong for the government to hang on the rejection of the bill as an excuse dishonour the remaining phase. The government knows very well that crucial services like education must run,” said Bore.

He now wants the National Treasury and the Teachers Service Commission to urgently find a solution, further questioning why the government has to wait until a strike takes place so as to act.

Teachers are demanding the implementation of the last phase of the CBA, threatening to down tools just before schools reopen at the end of this month.
