The Kisumu National Polytechnic has entered into a partnership with ABSA Bank in a greening initiative aimed at conserving the environment through tree planting.

In the initiative, the Kisumu national polytechnic has already planted 2,300 trees within the learning institution.

The Chief Principal Catherine Kelonye said they have initiated a corner at the institution dubbed as ABSA where the project will be located.

Kelonye led staff, workers, and ABSA staff in planting over 1000 trees over the weekend where the targeted number of trees was realized.

She said the green corner was a major success given the high number of turns out.

Kelonye said the move is in line with the government initiative of greening TVETS across the country.

A senior tutor Dr. Charles Nyangara said Kisumu is a very hot area noting that the initiative will mitigate the vagaries of the same.

Nyangara thanked ABSA for the partnership.

Abdi Mohamed from ABSA Bank said the move is welcome since it borders on government policies of greening the environment.

“As an active force for good, we care about the communities around us and the environment in which we operate. We have a wider commitment to planting 10 million trees by 2025 and becoming a net zero organization by 2040. ‘Mohamed said.

This year, he added they are targeting to plant over 1 million trees countrywide adding that they believe their efforts will scale the government’s efforts towards achieving 30 percent forest cover by 2032.

He said they understand the critical role that tree planting play in alleviating plastic pollution.

‘Trees act as natural filters and help mitigate the impact of plastic waste on our ecosystems.’ He said,
