Learning has been disrupted at Motontera DEB Primary School in Kenyenya Sub-county, Kisii County, after heavy rains that pounded the area last Friday left books soaked and damaged, forcing the suspension of classes on Thursday and Friday.
The downpour flooded sections of the school compound, destroying learning materials and leaving both learners and teachers stranded as they struggled to salvage wet textbooks and exercise books. Several classrooms were rendered unusable, making normal learning impossible.
Teachers were compelled to suspend lessons, with reports indicating that learners will be forced to study in dusty, uncomfortable classrooms when lessons resume, further affecting the quality of education.
Parents and members of the local community have expressed concern over the poor state of the school’s infrastructure, saying the situation has made learning increasingly difficult and unsafe for pupils.
The community is now appealing to the area Member of Parliament, Obadiah Barongo, to urgently intervene by supporting the school with improved infrastructure, proper drainage systems, and adequate learning facilities.
“We are appealing for urgent help. Our children cannot continue learning in these conditions. When it rains, everything is destroyed, and when it is dry, they sit in dust,” said one concerned parent.
Education stakeholders are also urging relevant authorities to prioritise the rehabilitation of classrooms and the improvement of school facilities to ensure learning is not repeatedly disrupted by adverse weather conditions.
