The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bomet Branch leadership has held consultations with Bomet Governor Prof. Hillary Barchok over the ongoing recruitment of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in the county.
Branch Executive Secretary Desmond Langat and Branch Chairman Davis Mitei met Governor Barchok at his office to raise concerns from teachers regarding the recruitment exercise and propose measures they said would promote fairness and continuity in learning.
The union leadership commended the governor for granting them an opportunity to present their concerns and for showing willingness to consider recommendations aimed at ensuring that deserving teachers are not unfairly disadvantaged by the ongoing exercise.
A key issue raised during the meeting was the fate of teachers who are already serving in various ECDE centres.
KNUT urged the county government to consider retaining such teachers in their current stations where possible, arguing that their continued presence would help avoid disruptions to learning and preserve the experience they have gained while serving learners.
Union seeks consideration for serving teachers
The union also called for special consideration of teachers approaching retirement, saying their years of service and experience should be taken into account during the recruitment process.
Teachers living with disabilities were also highlighted as a category deserving appropriate consideration to ensure that the exercise is inclusive and gives equal opportunities to qualified applicants.
The consultations come amid heightened interest in the county’s ECDE teacher recruitment exercise, with teachers and other stakeholders keen to see a process that is transparent, fair and responsive to the needs of both educators and learners.
KNUT Bomet leadership said it remains committed to protecting the welfare and interests of teachers while engaging the county government and other stakeholders to find practical solutions to challenges affecting the profession.

The union welcomed the governor’s willingness to listen to teachers and expressed optimism that further consultations would lead to a workable solution that accommodates qualified teachers while safeguarding the continuity and quality of ECDE education across Bomet County.
