Long-serving, acting teachers set to gain edge in TSC’s 34,016 promotion drive

TSC Acting CEO Dr Evaleen Mitei. The Commission is preparing to conduct interviews for 34,016 teacher promotion vacancies in September.
  • Long-serving teachers could have an advantage as TSC prepares to conduct promotion interviews in September.
  • The 34,016 vacancies span 30 cadres across public schools, teacher training colleges and curriculum support services.
  • Candidates will be assessed on factors including length of service, performance, qualifications and additional responsibilities.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to conduct a major teacher promotion exercise in September, with 34,016 promotional opportunities expected to benefit teachers across the country.

The promotion drive is likely to bring relief to thousands of teachers who have remained in the same grades for years despite gaining experience and taking on additional responsibilities.

According to the latest guidelines, the Commission is expected to give consideration to long-serving teachers who have experienced prolonged career stagnation, as well as those who have performed additional responsibilities, including administrative duties.

Teachers serving in acting administrative capacities could therefore benefit where such responsibilities are taken into account during the promotion process.

The focus on experience and additional responsibilities could address concerns among educators who have taken up leadership responsibilities without receiving corresponding substantive appointments or salary adjustments.

Thousands eye promotion

The 34,016 promotional slots represent one of the largest promotion exercises by the Commission and cover teachers and education personnel serving at different levels, including primary and post-primary institutions, teacher training colleges, Special Needs Education institutions and curriculum support services.

The move is also expected to boost morale within the teaching profession by providing career progression opportunities to thousands of teachers who have remained in the same grades for years.

Teachers seeking promotion are expected to compete for the available vacancies under TSC’s scoring system, which considers factors including length of service in the current grade, performance under the Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) system, academic qualifications and additional responsibilities.

Teachers who applied for the vacancies should monitor official communication from the TSC on the promotion process, including shortlisting and interviews.

The Commission advertised the 34,016 promotion vacancies in July, covering 30 cadres ranging from Senior Teacher II to Chief Principal.
