The government, through the Department of ICT and Digital Economy, is accelerating its digital transformation agenda. This comes even as a digital hub in Chepkorio Ward, Keiyo South Sub-County, is expected to be completed within the next two months.
ICT Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui said the facility is part of a broader government plan to establish 1,450 digital hubs across all wards in the country. Tanui said the hubs will provide young people with spaces to acquire and use digital skills while creating employment and self-employment opportunities. “Digital skills unlock massive opportunities both locally and internationally,” Tanui said. The PS added that Kenya had opened numerous international markets, creating opportunities for young people to earn a living through the digital economy. “Kenya has successfully opened numerous international markets. It is now the responsibility of our young people to position themselves and seize these global opportunities,” he said.
Tanui was speaking at Chepkorio Vocational Training Centre during the graduation of 360 youths who completed a one-month Huawei DigiTruck training programme. The graduates were trained on the use of digital skills in commerce, equipping them with knowledge they can use to market products and services online.

Tanui said the planned digital hubs would enable young people to participate in the digital economy using basic devices such as smartphones, and would also help address unemployment by giving youths opportunities to establish self-employment ventures.
Eng. Anthony Sang of Konza Technopolis said digital skills had become essential as government services increasingly move to online platforms. “ICT has become mandatory in modern times, especially as government services transition fully to online platforms,” Sang said. He encouraged residents to use digital platforms to market agricultural products such as potatoes directly to consumers instead of relying on middlemen. “We should not sell through brokers but direct to the customers,” he said.

Sang pointed out that two digital hubs would soon be completed within the sub-county, providing additional opportunities for residents to access digital services and markets. He challenged the graduates to establish online shops and use digital platforms to connect directly with customers, and urged young people to teach basic digital skills to older members of the community to enable them to participate in online marketplaces. Sang further encouraged farmers and traders to make use of upcoming county aggregation parks to add value to agricultural produce before taking it to market.
