Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa on Tuesday  officially flagged off and kitted high school teams representing the county ahead of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) regional games, scheduled to take place in Kakamega from July 9 to 12.

Addressing players, coaches, and education stakeholders during the ceremony, Governor Barasa lauded the students’ commitment and reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to nurturing young talent through sport.

“Our teams are prepared and ready to bring us victory,” he said. “We are nurturing young talent while positioning Kakamega as a premier sporting destination. These events will not only highlight our athletic prowess but also stimulate economic activity for our people.”

The regional championships mark the beginning of a busy sporting calendar for Kakamega County. Dubbed the “cathedral of talent,” Kakamega will also play host to the national KSSSA games and the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) championships this August.

With preparations in top gear, the county is banking on its proven track record and growing sports infrastructure to deliver successful tournaments. Governor Barasa noted that hosting such high-profile events will attract thousands of visitors, presenting a significant boost to local businesses, including hotels, food vendors, and transport operators.

The teams, drawn from various schools across the county, expressed gratitude for the county’s support and pledged to deliver outstanding performances. For many of these student-athletes, the regional games offer a chance to showcase their talents on a bigger stage and secure opportunities beyond the classroom.

As the county gears up for the regional showdown, excitement is building among residents, with hopes high that the home teams will rise to the occasion and cement Kakamega’s status as a powerhouse in school sports.
