Why top KCSE schools are turning to ability grouping for Form Four candidates

Memories
Education consultant Victor Ochieng', who advocates ability grouping as one of the best academic practices for improving KCSE performance among Form Four candidates.
  • Ability grouping has become a common strategy among high-performing schools preparing candidates for the KCSE.
  • Education experts say grouping learners according to their needs enables targeted instruction and improves academic outcomes.
  • When implemented carefully, the approach supports differentiated learning while boosting both high achievers and struggling learners.

Straight into it, in best academic practices, with a special focus on great management of Form Four candidates, there are 5 forms of ability grouping: General ability grouping, subject-based ability grouping, formation of academic villages, parenting grouping or family units, and pairing of students. Apropos of ability grouping, more so, general ability grouping, should be explored as part of holistic homestretch programme. Meaning, it is one of the best academic practices employed by schools after timely and comely completion of syllabus. Dear reader, as I rhapsodise about Ability Grouping, it is important to know that it is a correct concept that abuts on Differentiated Learning (DL) or Differentiated Instruction (DI). To trace its true provenance, it was popularised by Carol Ann. She delineated it as a proactive approach to teaching geared towards ensuring that every learner has equal opportunity to access success in class.

Put aptly, it is an approach where teachers modify their teaching methods, models, materials, activities and assessments to meet the diverse learning needs, abilities, interests, and backgrounds of learners. More so, when focusing on mastery of relevant content and concepts. The philosophy acknowledges that learners are different. In that regard, they should never wend the same way while teaching them. So, in DL or DI, schools embrace groups galore, which can be group discussions, mixed ability grouping, interest grouping, random grouping, ability grouping, et cetera. In this writ, I sat to ideate and write about the types of ability grouping, their advantages, and how they prepare Form 4 candidates for KCSE exams.

  1. General Ability Group

Somewhat, in this type of ability grouping, after a well-thought-out assessment, the school can come up with classes based on the general academic ability of learners in the candidate class. In a class of 150 students, the school can come up with three streams – top 50, middle 50 and bottom 50. The real reason for formation of streams should be made known to learners prior. Or else, they may think it is an act of separation, marginalisation and stigmatisation. Likewise, teachers should also get it right while labeling the streams. So that the naming of classes does not look like a promotion of inferiority or superiority contest of some sort. For such an act can dent the self-esteem of learners. It can also put out the fire of morale and motivation in them.

Advisedly, my fellow educators should be keen and careful on how they introduce General Ability Grouping to learners so that they do not balkanise the class based on academic potential. For if it is done objectively, the bottom class may decide to engage in self-pity or weld themselves together as a camp of cheerful pessimists. They may fail to try, and cry.

Additionally, my fellow professional teachers should have a riveting rehash of what they learnt in Sociology of Education. There is a Sociological Theory called Labelling Theory, which cautions tutors against labelling learners as weak or sick. Then, those who are at home with Self-fulfilling Prophesies Golem, Pygmalion (Rosenthal) and Galatea Effects are also cognizant of the fact that the American Psychologist Robert Rosenthal (1933-2024) reminded educators at large to re-think on how they perceive the academic potential of learners.

Actually, schools oft opt to adopt General Ability Grouping not to isolate learners per se, but to fatten (push) the head, as they cut (reduce) the size of the tail in the candidate class. Ostensibly, educators with cache of experience in the noble art of dispensing knowledge, know that there is nothing as challenging as polishing the candidate class with mixed abilities. Or even those on extreme ends. No wonder, schools ought to consider attending to all ilk of learners. How? By pushing Form 4 champions to score more. By the same token, assisting struggling students or learners that look low and slow to improve through the Kaizen Principle of Continuous Improvement.

  1. Subject-Based Ability Grouping

Moreover, in this type of Ability Grouping, subject teachers group students according to the performance in their subjects. They should go ahead and organise conferencing sessions with each group. The end-in-mind is; the bottom group is able to score above a C- (minus) in their subjects. Therefore, this is a stupendous strategy that assists schools to get more quality grades in the candidate class.

  1. Formation of Academic Villages

Consequently, in this type of Ability Grouping, teachers group students based on their common targets or aspirations. This model can take care of repeaters, prefects, peer counsellors, champions, et cetera. Teachers should take care of every village. Push the group to unleash at the acme of their game. Some schools have students who are sleeping or snoring giants that in real sense, can feature in the top 20 or 100 in national ranking. This calibre of Form Four candidates should get serious push, and be made to stretch beyond their supple or elastic limits. Or else, they can choose to become complacent, settle for less, and be prone to mediocrity: Being on top of the bottom. Being at the bottom of the top. Being the best among the worst. Being the first among the last.

  1. Parenting Grouping or Family Units

Furthermore, in this type of Ability Grouping, school cluster Form Four candidates into parenting groups or family units. Then, the groups are assigned teacher-parents to act as surrogate parents. This approach is good because some learners lack appropriate parental push. Therefore, teacher-parents help them set targets. They organise regular meetings to provide direction, focus, and keep them on the right track. For Form Four candidates should not operate on laissez faire basis. Teachers’ ubiquity, eternal vigilance and constant monitoring is imperative.

  1. Pairing Students

Finally, in this type of Ability Grouping, struggling students should pair up with top achievers in their class. As high-fliers commit themselves to help the struggling students through peer teaching, they attain marvellous mastery of content. In the long run, this infusion and collation of abilities, props up the poor performance of struggling students.
