Thousands of teachers waiting for transfer letters have been informed that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has pushed the consideration of transfer requests to December 2026. The move means the traditional movement of teachers between stations is unlikely to take place this term, as the Commission turns its attention to two major national assignments: deployment of teachers for national examinations and assessments, and interviews for 34,016 promotion vacancies.
Transfer boards operating at Sub-County, County, Regional and National levels are expected to sit in December to consider pending applications. Successful teachers will then receive their transfer letters in January 2027, allowing them to prepare for deployment to their new stations at the beginning of the next academic year.
230,000 Teachers Targeted for National Exams
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is preparing to engage at least 230,000 teachers in different examination roles, including invigilators, supervisors, centre managers and script markers. Other contracted personnel, including security officers and drivers, will also be involved in the wider examination operation. TSC Sub-County and County Directors are expected to play a role in coordinating the deployment of teachers in conjunction with KNEC. These officers are also part of the administrative structures involved in other TSC exercises, including promotions and transfers, requiring the Commission to sequence its activities to avoid overstretching the same field personnel.

34,016 Teachers Battle for Promotions
TSC has advertised 34,016 promotion vacancies, attracting applications from teachers across the country. Applications closed on August 10, and the exercise has now entered the interview phase. TSC is using SMS notifications to alert shortlisted teachers about their interview schedules. Primary school teachers are among the first to receive the messages, with invitations sent between August 31 and September 11, and their interviews scheduled for September 8 to 15. The second phase will involve post-primary teachers, including secondary school teachers, TTC tutors and Curriculum Support Officers, with interviews scheduled for September 17 to 25.

Shortlisted teachers have been urged to prepare their documents ahead of the interviews. Required documentation includes the original national ID, academic and professional certificates, appointment letter to the current grade, latest TSC payslip and the last promotion letter, where applicable. Teachers with leadership or administrative experience may also need letters confirming responsibilities previously assigned to them, including Head of Institution (HOI), Deputy Head of Institution (DHOI) or senior responsibilities, along with performance appraisal records for 2023, 2024 and 2025. Teachers can additionally present evidence of professional engagement through programmes such as Teacher Induction, Mentorship and Coaching (TIMEC), CBE training, CEMASTEA activities, county training, KNEC examination work, item development, KICD panels, book evaluation, authorship and curriculum-related activities, as well as co-curricular involvement at sub-county, county, regional, national or international level.
1,631 Fresh Promotion Opportunities
TSC on September 1 re-advertised 1,631 promotion vacancies covering Deputy Principal III (Regular), Senior Master II and Deputy Headteacher II (Regular). The service requirement for these positions has been reduced from three years to two years in the current grade, expanding the pool of eligible teachers. Applications for the 1,631 vacancies close at midnight on September 14, 2026.

TSC has placed transfer requests behind the examinations and promotion exercises in its administrative calendar, citing the scale of both undertakings. The national examinations operation involves more than 230,000 teachers, while the promotion exercise covering 34,016 vacancies has already entered its interview phase. If the transfer boards complete their work as scheduled in December, January 2027 is expected to see a significant movement of teachers across stations, covering both intra-county and inter-county transfers depending on requests and available vacancies.
