The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) now wants Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers to be employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The union argues that the move would improve the educators’ working conditions and morale.
KNUT Women’s Representative Patricia Mellisa said placing ECDE teachers under TSC would enable them to earn better salaries and enjoy improved benefits.
“The employment of ECDE teachers by the TSC would enable them to receive better salaries and improved benefits,” Mellisa said.
She said county governments were facing numerous challenges and lacked the capacity to adequately meet the needs of ECDE teachers.
Speaking to stakeholders in Slimu, Mellisa said ECDE teachers play a critical role in the education system and should not be neglected.
“These teachers perform an important role and should never be forgotten,” she said.
Union calls for better pay
Mellisa further raised concerns over the low salaries earned by ECDE teachers, saying poor remuneration had negatively affected their performance.
“Their concerns and demands must be fully addressed,” she said, calling for better pay and improved working conditions for the teachers.
KNUT also criticised county governments for what it described as a failure to give education matters the attention they deserve. The union pledged to continue advocating for the welfare and rights of ECDE teachers.

ECDE teachers in various counties continue to face a number of challenges, with county governments coming under pressure to address their concerns and improve their working conditions.
