More Kenyans are seeking opportunities abroad, with the latest figures showing a sharp rise in visa applications driven by education, employment, healthcare, tourism and business travel.
New data released by VFS Global indicates that visa applications submitted by Kenyans increased by 20 per cent during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.
The latest increase follows an even stronger 44 per cent growth recorded in 2025, reflecting sustained demand for international travel despite evolving immigration policies and tighter border controls in some countries.
Education and employment drive applications
Among the most popular destinations are Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Canada, China and Australia.
Saudi Arabia continues to attract thousands of Kenyan workers in healthcare, domestic services, construction, hospitality and security, while also receiving large numbers of pilgrims travelling for Hajj and Umrah.
The United Kingdom remains a preferred destination for students, skilled workers and families seeking reunification. Canada continues to attract skilled professionals, international students and permanent residency applicants through its immigration programmes.
China has also recorded growing interest from Kenyan businesspeople, university students and patients seeking specialised medical treatment, supported by stronger economic ties, scholarship opportunities and trade partnerships.
Industry analysts attribute the upward trend to improved global connectivity, increased awareness of overseas education opportunities, expanding labour migration programmes and the desire among young professionals to gain international experience.
Travellers warned against visa fraud
Despite the growing demand, VFS Global has warned applicants against fraudsters, unauthorised brokers and travel agents who falsely claim they can influence visa approvals or secure faster appointments for a fee.
The company emphasised that it only provides administrative services such as receiving visa applications, collecting biometric data and forwarding documents to embassies and consulates. Visa decisions are made solely by the relevant diplomatic missions.
Applicants have been advised to submit applications only through official visa application centres or authorised online portals, verify payment instructions before making transactions and avoid sharing personal information with unverified individuals.

Experts also encourage travellers to begin the application process early, ensure supporting documents are complete and familiarise themselves with the immigration requirements of their intended destinations.
