The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has renewed calls for the entire Narok County to be gazetted as a hardship area to enable teachers across the county to benefit from hardship allowances.
KUPPET Narok Branch Chairperson Kipkoech Kirui said teachers in the county face numerous challenges in their day-to-day work, which he said warranted the extension of hardship status to all sub-counties.
Addressing the press, Kirui lamented that efforts to have the entire county gazetted as a hardship area had been unsuccessful despite the union raising the issue since 2019.
“We have been pushing for the entire county to be gazetted as a hardship area since 2019, but the relevant authorities have remained silent on the matter,” Kirui said.
He said granting hardship status to the entire county would motivate teachers and improve their performance.
“Gazetting the entire county as a hardship area will greatly motivate our teachers and boost their performance,” he said.
Union seeks equal treatment for teachers
Kirui appealed to local leaders to intervene and push for the implementation of the proposal, saying teachers from areas that are currently not gazetted should also enjoy the same benefits as their counterparts in hardship zones.
“Our teachers deserve to benefit from hardship allowances just like their counterparts in other parts of the country,” he said.
Currently, parts of Narok County are designated as hardship areas. A 2025 parliamentary report listing designated hardship areas identifies Eastern Mau, Osupuko Mara, Loita and Southern Olulunga divisions under Narok.
Teachers from other parts of the county have also been calling for their areas to be accorded the same status.
Gazettement of an area as a hardship zone allows eligible teachers and other public servants working there to qualify for hardship allowances under the applicable regulations.

KUPPET says extending the status to the entire county would help address disparities in allowances and recognise the challenges faced by teachers working in the region.
