St John’s Nyamagwa Boys High School in Sameta Sub-County is set to hold its Annual Cultural Festival on Friday this week at its playground in an activity that will showcase the community’s major ways of life.
According to the institution’s alumni, the event will be attended by prominent people, the majority drawn from the pioneer students of the school.
Among the cultural activities to be featured are traditional meals, ways of dressing, traditional houses and traditional dances.
Connecting learners with their culture
The school principal, Mr Joseph Nyapeni, who spoke by phone to Education News, said the event is meant to remind learners to remain aware of their people’s way of life and give them a break from classwork to refresh their minds as they prepare for the end of the third term, which is characterised by examinations.
The festival will also include the preservation of Gusii culture through the display of foods such as amatoke, chinsaga and obokima bw’obori, talent searches through obokano and folk songs, moral teachings by elders, and community bonding where parents and alumni will interact with learners.

The Cultural Festival will also feature Christian prayers, given that St John’s Nyamagwa Boys is a Catholic-sponsored institution.
