Moi University don has challenged graduates to shift from a traditional job-seeking mindset and instead focus on creating employment opportunities as a strategy to tackle rising unemployment among young people.
Speaking during the third graduation ceremony at the Matili Technical Training Institute, Professor Okumu Bigambo, called on graduates to embrace entrepreneurship and innovation as key drivers of economic transformation.
Professor Bigambo, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Board of Governors at the institution, said the evolving job market demands creativity, adaptability and practical application of skills acquired through training.
He noted that technical and vocational education institutions remain central in equipping young people with hands-on competencies that can be converted into business opportunities and sustainable livelihoods.
“The reality today is that jobs are limited, but opportunities are abundant for those who are creative and willing to take initiative. Graduates must position themselves as problem solvers and job creators,” he said.
He further emphasized the need for graduates to uphold discipline, professionalism and integrity as they transition into the world of work, noting that character remains a critical determinant of success beyond academic qualifications.

Professor Bigambo also underscored the importance of continuous learning and innovation, urging the graduates to keep upgrading their skills in line with technological and industrial advancements.
As Board of Governors Chairperson, he reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to strengthening technical training programs aimed at producing graduates who are both employable and capable of generating employment.
He added that the institution is focused on aligning its training with market demands to ensure graduates are well equipped to contribute meaningfully to economic growth and national development.
The ceremony brought together education stakeholders who echoed calls for stronger collaboration between training institutions, industry players and government agencies to enhance youth employability and entrepreneurship.
Graduates were encouraged to apply the skills acquired during their training to real-world challenges, with optimism that they will play a key role in driving innovation and development in their respective fields.
