Understanding compounding learning deficits: The small gaps that become big barriers

Learning deficits rarely appear overnight. In many classrooms, a learner does not suddenly become unable to read, solve mathematical problems, write coherently or understand scientific concepts. More often, the difficulty develops gradually. A small misunderstanding is left unresolved. A missed lesson is never properly recovered. A learner memorises a concept without understanding it. The next topic builds on that weak foundation, creating another gap. Over time, these small weaknesses accumulate into what can be described as compounding learning deficits.

Compounding learning deficits are small academic weaknesses that accumulate over time, causing progressively greater difficulties in learning and performance. The concept is particularly important because education is cumulative. What learners understand today often becomes the foundation for what they are expected to learn tomorrow. When the foundation is weak, every subsequent level becomes more difficult.

Consider a learner struggling with basic reading skills. At first, the problem may appear minor. The learner takes longer to read a passage or struggles with unfamiliar vocabulary. However, as the curriculum becomes more demanding, the consequences increase. Poor reading fluency affects comprehension. Weak comprehension affects performance in English, Social Sciences, Science and even Mathematics, where understanding word problems is essential. What began as a small literacy gap eventually becomes a broad academic challenge.

The same pattern occurs in Mathematics. A learner who does not fully understand fractions may still progress to decimals, percentages, ratios, algebra and financial mathematics. The learner may memorise procedures and survive individual examinations, but the unresolved foundational weakness continues to interfere with more advanced concepts. Eventually, the learner may be labelled “weak in Mathematics” when the real problem began several years earlier with a specific concept that was never mastered.

Identifying learning gaps early

This is why identifying learning deficits early is critical. Schools should not wait until a learner performs poorly in a national examination before investigating the underlying causes. Continuous assessment provides valuable opportunities to detect weaknesses while they are still manageable. Class exercises, oral questioning, assignments, formative assessments and examination analysis can reveal patterns that may otherwise remain hidden.

Unfortunately, some education systems place considerable emphasis on coverage rather than mastery. Teachers face pressure to complete the syllabus, while learners are expected to move from one topic to another according to the academic calendar. The danger is that curriculum coverage can create an illusion of progress. A class may have “completed” a topic, yet several learners may still lack the knowledge and skills required to proceed confidently.

The solution is not necessarily to slow down the entire education system. Rather, schools need mechanisms for identifying and addressing individual learning gaps. Diagnostic assessment can help teachers determine precisely what a learner knows, what they do not know and where the difficulty originated. Remediation can then target the specific weakness instead of repeatedly exposing the learner to the same content without addressing the root problem.

Teachers also need to recognise that poor performance is not always evidence of laziness or lack of ability. A learner who consistently fails may be carrying years of accumulated gaps. Telling such a learner to “work harder” may not be enough. The learner may need structured support, additional practice, differentiated instruction and opportunities to rebuild confidence.

Parents and technology have a role

Parents have an important role as well. Academic difficulties should be detected and discussed early rather than becoming a source of blame. Regular communication between parents and teachers can help identify changes in performance, attendance, study habits and motivation. Where necessary, schools can establish targeted intervention programmes for learners who require additional academic support.

Technology can also contribute to addressing learning deficits. Digital learning platforms, computer-based assessments and personalised learning resources can help identify areas of weakness and provide additional practice. However, technology should complement—not replace—the professional judgement of teachers. A skilled teacher remains essential in interpreting assessment evidence, understanding the learner’s context and selecting appropriate interventions.

Perhaps the greatest lesson is that learning gaps are easier and cheaper to address when they are small. A ten-minute intervention today may prevent months of struggle tomorrow. A short remedial lesson can strengthen a foundation before the next topic depends on it. Early intervention therefore represents not only good pedagogy but also an investment in educational efficiency.

Move from recording marks to analysing learning

Schools should consequently move from a culture of simply recording marks to one of analysing learning. A score of 45 per cent should not merely be entered into a mark sheet. Teachers should ask: Which competencies were mastered? Which were not? Is the weakness isolated or persistent? Does it originate from the current topic or from an earlier concept? What intervention is required?

Compounding learning deficits remind us that educational failure is often a process rather than an event. The learner who struggles in Form Four may have been experiencing unresolved difficulties since primary school. The student who finds secondary-school Mathematics overwhelming may have missed essential concepts years earlier. By the time the problem becomes visible, the gap may already be substantial.

The responsibility, therefore, is to catch learning gaps before they compound. Effective education is not simply about moving learners through grades; it is about ensuring that they acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to succeed at each stage. A small gap ignored today can become a major barrier tomorrow. Early identification, targeted remediation and consistent support can interrupt that cycle and give every learner a stronger foundation for future achievement.
