Vihiga County’s Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) have registered outstanding performance at the 2026 Kenya National Drama Festivals held in Nyeri, clinching top honours across several competitive categories and reaffirming their growing presence in Kenya’s performing arts scene.
Maseno VTC emerged as the leading institution from the county after scooping four top awards in solo dance, play, spoken word, and modern dance. The institution’s productions stood out for their originality, technical precision, and stage execution, earning praise from adjudicators and drawing attention from audiences at the national event. The achievement places Maseno VTC among the top-performing institutions at this year’s festival.
Boyani VTC also delivered an impressive performance, demonstrating consistency across categories. The institution secured first position in solo verse, second position in choral verse, and second position in cultural creative dance. Their ability to compete strongly in both individual and group presentations highlighted the depth of talent and preparation within the institution.

Hambale VTC further strengthened Vihiga County’s showing after clinching first position in the narrative category. The institution’s entry stood out for its compelling storytelling, thematic relevance, and confident stage delivery, earning it top recognition from judges.
The performance by the three VTCs marks a significant shift in the traditionally school-dominated festival, where secondary schools and universities have historically taken the lead. This year’s results underscore the increasing role of vocational training institutions in nurturing artistic talent and promoting creative expression among young people.
County officials attributed the success to increased investment in co-curricular activities within VTCs, as well as improved mentorship and exposure to competitive platforms. The strong showing is also seen as a reflection of the county’s commitment to holistic education that goes beyond technical training.
As the curtains fall on the national event, Vihiga County returns home with multiple accolades, signaling a new chapter for its vocational institutions. The results not only bring pride to the county but also set the stage for greater participation and competitiveness of VTCs in future editions of the national drama festivals.
