Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been faulted for delaying disbursement of salaries to teachers teaching in the Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).
KUPPET Trans Nzoia branch officials called out the teachers’ employer to expedite payment before the opening of schools, saying the tutors are going through untold suffering occasioned by nonpayment of their dues.
Speaking in Kitale during the Labour Day celebrations, union branch Secretary, Eliud Wafula, said the tutors are frustrated and has made them demoralized, adding that JSS teachers’ dignity has been lowered and reduced their confidence in implementing the new CBC curriculum as it should be.
Wafula said the teachers have nothing to celebrate if their colleagues are suffering from government’s fault to hold on salaries yet they have provided services for close to four months.
He remarked “as we celebrate this day, there is no celebration in the houses of JSS teachers as they have not been paid and cannot afford to fend for their families. These teachers are being bothered by boda-boda operators and shops making them lose their dignity and reduce their confidence.”
He called on the government to look for mechanisms on how to pay the teachers to boost their morale as schools reopen next week.
He at the time appealed to the state to improve the environment in primary schools where the teachers are deployed to, saying the educators had to deal with environmental shock as they were not accustomed to.
The same sentiments were shared by the chairman, Maxwel Nyangeri who said the teachers are facing challenges making them unable to meet their needs.
The teachers’ employer issued a statement indicating that half of the JSS teachers received their salaries in April payout.
