TSC to recruit over 35,000 teachers ahead of JSS rollout

By Kimiywi Sydney

The Teachers Service Commission will this month recruit 35,550 teachers in a move to curb teacher shortage problems in schools ahead of the rollout of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in January 2023.

In an advertisement appearing in today’s dailies, TSC declared 9,000 vacancies in public secondary schools and 1,000 vacancies in public primary schools. The 10,000 teachers will be employed under permanent and pensionable terms.

21,550 vacancies will be for intern JSS teachers while the remaining 4,000 will serve as primary schools intern teachers.

The recruitment will be in line with the government’s promise to counter the 116,000 teacher shortage by hiring 30,000 teachers by January next year.

The Commission noted that preference will be given to those who have not been employed by TSC on a permanent basis before and that the selection will be based on the number of vacancies per county.

Those seeking to apply for the positions have to be registered members of TSC with a P1 certificate for primary school teacher or intern; and at least a Diploma in Education with a minimum mean grade of C+ and a C+ in two teaching subjects in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) for secondary school teacher or intern.

The deadline for application is December 16, 2022.
