Thika special school urgently seeking financial assistance as sponsors leave

The Salvation Army Thika High School for The Visually Impaired is urgently appealing to well-wishers to donate financial assistance as its facilities and infrastructure are in deplorable condition.

According to Principal Simon Kamau Ndambuki, the mixed public special school in Thika town was established in 1967 and had various sponsors who spearheaded a lot of development but have since pulled out leaving a trail of dilapidated buildings and flaked floors.

Ndambuki said that the school, despite having seasoned educators, is in dire need of requisite teaching and learning materials to enable learners with diverse visual and hearing challenges realize their full potential in the academic space, adding that the funding they are currently receiving is insufficient to enable smooth running of the school.

He added that the deficiency has led to a myriad of attitudinal, physical, policy, communication and social challenges which hamper the natural learning abilities of the learners.

The dining hall only has tables but insufficient seats and a complementary additional makeshift tent as a hall has been erected but has neither tables nor seats.

The hostels in the school have stretched past its limits hosting 455 students way past its limit of 250 learners as more parents enroll their children.

To curb the stretching population, the school has converted its dispensary into a classroom leading to open-air medication which doctors have termed as hazardous.

The Principal has thus urged Good Samaritans to visit the institution, assess challenges and offer assistance in kind so that the special learners get an opportunity to realize their dreams.

The school trains learners on various skills based on their abilities and is known for producing extraordinary personalities such as Professor Samuel Tororei of Moi University among other prominent persons.
