The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has changed the venue for its Kiambu branch elections scheduled for today, Saturday, November 7, following the unavailability of the initially designated polling centre.
In a notice dated November 5, Secretary-General Akelo Misori informed union members that the exercise, which had been scheduled to take place at Mukuyu Primary School within Ruiru Prisons Grounds, would now be conducted at St George's Primary and Junior School in Ruiru.
The union said the change was necessitated by the unavailability of Mukuyu Primary School, urging members to take note of the new venue and make the necessary arrangements to participate in the electoral exercise.
Polling is scheduled to open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m., with all eligible members expected to cast their votes within the stipulated period.
Misori apologised for the inconvenience caused by the late adjustment, appealing to members for understanding, cooperation and continued support as the union prepares for the polls.
Elections amid leadership disputes
The venue change comes at a time when KUPPET is facing heightened scrutiny over internal leadership disputes, branch elections and governance issues, with disagreements increasingly finding their way into the courts.
The Kiambu branch elections are particularly significant as members seek to elect their representatives amid the wider contest over the union's leadership and administration.
The exercise is also expected to test the union's ability to conduct a credible and orderly electoral process, following concerns raised in various disputes over transparency, accountability and adherence to electoral procedures.
In the November 5 communication, Misori also copied the Commissioner for Labour and the Registrar of Trade Unions, formally notifying the two offices of the change of venue.
The union has urged members to attend the elections at the revised location and participate in choosing their branch leadership.
