Well-wishers have raised more than KSh5.4 million to support the Tenda Wema Mizizi Scholarship Initiative, which seeks to keep vulnerable children, youth and persons with disabilities in school.
The funds were raised during the Sara Cup, an annual corporate social responsibility tournament organised under the Tenda Wema initiative by Mizizi Elimu Afrika (formerly Zizi Afrique Foundation), in partnership with PAL Network and RELI Africa.
Held at St Mary’s School in Nairobi, the tournament brought together corporates, organisations, schools and well-wishers for a day of sports, fun and fundraising.
The annual event has grown significantly since its inception in 2021, when it raised KSh70,000. Last year, organisers raised about KSh5.4 million, while this year’s fundraiser surpassed KSh5.4 million. The organisers are targeting KSh10 million from the fundraising drive.
The money will be used to keep existing scholars in school and provide education opportunities to deserving children and young people facing financial challenges.

Tenda Wema, which means “do good without expecting anything in return,” is Mizizi Elimu Afrika’s flagship giving initiative. It mobilises communities and partners to ensure that children are not excluded from education because of poverty, vulnerability or marginalisation.
The initiative currently supports 118 scholars across 60 schools in 13 counties. The scholars include 69 boys and 49 girls, according to information provided by the organisation. Since 2021, 20 scholars have completed their studies, with 10 having secured employment.
Speaking during the event, researcher and educator Dr Sara Ruto said the initiative was established to support children who struggle to continue their education because of financial difficulties.
Dr Sara, who is the Sara tournament patron, said Tenda Wema does not restrict support to students who attain specific academic grades, noting that some children miss out on other scholarship opportunities because they do not meet academic requirements.
“We support children who find it difficult to continue with their education because of financial challenges,” Ruto said, adding that the initiative seeks to help level the playing field for learners.
She said the support can also extend beyond secondary school, helping beneficiaries transition to college and other forms of higher education.
Dr Hezron Mogaka, Director of Mizizi Elimu Afrika, encouraged members of the public to contribute to the initiative, saying everyone can play a role in supporting a child’s education.
He said people have appreciated the need to contribute towards enhancing the quality of education in the country by supporting needy children.

The tournament has attracted participants and supporters from different parts of the country, including young people and older community members.
One of the beneficiaries, Patrick Salankat, shared his experience of receiving support through the programme. Salankat said he began receiving assistance in 2021 while he was a Form One student at Narok High School.
He said his family was experiencing financial difficulties at the time and he needed support to remain in school. Salankat is now a second-year university student pursuing a degree in business.
Tenda Wema aims to raise KSh35 million to keep children in school and KSh40 million to establish the Tenda Wema Endowment Fund, which is intended to provide long-term support for education.
