Taita Taveta bans term-opening exams to curb school fires

Taita Taveta County security team has banned term-opening exams in public secondary schools as part of the efforts to tame arson incidents in schools.

The announcement was made by the county commissioner, Linda Okolla, who said that the tests cause unnecessary tension among students and was among the reasons behind fire incidents in schools.

The team further said that the test shall be replaced by guidance and counselling platforms and spiritual nourishments.

“We have banned opening term exams to tame rampant fires experienced in schools immediately schools open.”

She added that the exams have caused anxiety and riots among students, including torching of school dormitories.

Okolla urged school management to resort to student barazas, guidance ad counselling to reduce the cases of student unrests; the act she noted will bring students and teachers together to find a lasting solution to the issues bedeviling schools.
