Over 200 students from universities and high schools gathered at Riara University from July 18 to 20 for a three day innovation challenge aimed at turning creative ideas into practical solutions using design thinking.

The event brought together participants from various institutions including Riara University (RU), the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), Kenya Methodist University (KEMU), and others. It was organized in partnership with Anza Village, TUK and RU, offering students a platform to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills.

The top award went to a team that developed a digital learning platform named Jabali, designed to support children with autism. The team included Gift Saisi, Dennis Huhu and Lorraine Nyawira from RU, Raphael Nganga and Martine Obwao from TUK and Telvin Ochieng from KEMU.

The first runners-up presented Eden Recyclers, a project that encourages the making of pencil leads from recycled paper waste and promotes the use of eco-friendly shoe polish. The aim is to reduce waste and support environmental conservation.

The second runners-up designed a fuel saving stove that helps cut down on energy use and cooking costs. The project focuses on affordable and clean cooking methods that are also friendly to the environment.

All winning teams will enter a two-month incubation period in August and September. This next phase will help them improve and prepare their ideas for real life use.
