School heads of learning institutions in the country are breathing a sigh of relief, albeit with a little skepticism, after Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu revealed that they will receive the promised Ksh28 billion capitation funds by Friday this week.

During his presentation at the National Assembly on Wednesday June 7, 2023 where he was summoned by the Parliamentary Education Committee, Machogu said that he has been working closely with the Treasury Permanent Secretary (PS) Dr. Chris Kiptoo to release the funds as soon as possible.

“And I wish to report to the honourable members and the country as a whole that indeed he has confirmed that by tomorrow, the funds will be in the Ministry accounts and thereafter, we will be able to disburse the same to all schools countrywide,” he said.

He added: “By Friday of this week our schools will be able to receive capitation funds… We are sorry for the delay but by the end of the week, the money should be in the accounts of the schools.”

In line with the funds disbursement, each pupil in primary school will receive Ksh1,450 while those in Junior and Senior Secondary schools will receive Ksh15,040 and Ksh22,240 respectively.

This comes amid complaints by school heads who have decried the struggle to provide food for students in addition to running the institutions as they are cash strapped.
