Five school girls who were sponsored by their parents to undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) have been rescued by the Police in Migori County.

According to Kuria West OCPD Kirech Maiyo, his security officers moved with speed to Ntungiri village and rescued the five minors aged 16, 13, 12, 11 and 11.

This is after they were tipped by a group of resident Christians led by Pr. Charles Matiko who said reiterated that the exercise is unbiblical and unlawful.

The suspects were booked at Kehancha Police Station for further interrogation.

“The suspects are in our custody and will be arraigned in court on Monday,” said the Police boss.

He sent a stern warning to those intending to practice the outlawed FGM on their daughters during the December holiday.

“Let our parents abandon this old-fashioned culture of torment to our daughters and give them peace of mind to study during this long holiday,” he advised.

Kimaiyo said that he had instructed his security officers to engage villagers who will work under cover to report perpetrators of the crime.

He assured the residents of safety to them and their property during and after the Christmas and the New Year festivities.
