Prof Abubakar named new TUM vice chancellor

The Ministry of Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed has appointed Laila Abubakar as the new Vice Chancellor of the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM).
This comes after Joseph Mwatela was sent home in 2016.
The professor of biochemistry has become the first muslim woman to hold such a position in the academic field.
She has been acting VC for two years before she was confirmed recently.
School of Applied and Health Sciences Dean RahmaUdu said the appointment of Abubakar should see more women motivated to seek such high positions.
“We are glad that the efforts of women in the academic field have been acknowledged through Prof Abubakar’s confirmation as substantive vice chancellor at TUM.” said Dr Rahma.
Prof Abubakar is attributed for settling down student unrest after facilitating the accreditation of engineering programs by the Engineering Board of Kenya in August 2016.
