  • Nyeri County has allocated KSh899.3 million to education in the 2026/2027 financial year budget.
  • Nearly half of the allocation will finance education infrastructure through county and KDSP II investments.
  • The funding will support ECDE, youth polytechnics, teacher salaries and vocational training.

Nyeri County has allocated KSh899.3 million to education in the 2026/2027 financial year budget, with nearly half of the allocation earmarked for physical infrastructure and capital investments aimed at improving learning institutions across the county.

The education budget comprises KSh434 million for development, representing 48.3 per cent of the total allocation, and KSh465.3 million for recurrent expenditure, accounting for the remaining 51.7 per cent.

A total of KSh68 million from the development budget has been allocated for upgrading youth polytechnics and Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres.

The investment will finance improvements in physical infrastructure at institutions serving pre-primary learners and young people pursuing vocational and technical skills.

The largest share of the development budget, KSh352 million, has been allocated through the Kenya Devolution Support Programme (KDSP II) Investment Grant, a World Bank-supported performance grant that finances, among other eligible sectors, the rehabilitation and construction of education infrastructure at the county level.

The recurrent allocation of KSh465.3 million will cater for personnel emoluments for ECDE teachers and youth polytechnic instructors, procurement of learning materials, payment of utility bills and other administrative costs across the county.

Continued focus on education

The 2026/2027 allocation reinforces Nyeri County’s continued investment in education.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who also chairs the Council of Governors Education Committee, recently noted that the county has disbursed more than KSh879 million through the Nyeri County Elimu Fund, benefiting over 156,000 learners.

According to the governor, 30 per cent of the bursary fund has supported students in tertiary institutions, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.

The investments in ECDE, vocational training and institutional infrastructure are expected to enhance learning opportunities and support the county’s broader human capital development agenda.
