- Boys’ dormitory completely destroyed in evening blaze at Kongoni Secondary School.
- Students were away after being sent home following unrest and the ongoing mid-term break.
- Investigations have been launched as authorities seek to establish the cause of the fire.
A boys’ dormitory at Kongoni Secondary School in Likuyani Sub-County, Kakamega County, was completely destroyed by fire on the evening of Thursday, June 25, 2026, in an incident whose cause remains unknown.
The fire engulfed the dormitory, reducing it to ashes and destroying all students’ belongings that had been left inside. By the time the flames were brought under control, nothing had been salvaged from the building.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the school was deserted at the time of the incident.
The students had not yet returned to school after they were sent home following unrest that rocked the institution about two weeks earlier.
Mid-term break
Schools across Kenya are also currently on the mid-term break, meaning the dormitory was unoccupied when the fire broke out.
The destruction is expected to deal a setback to the school, as administrators will now have to assess the extent of the losses and plan for the replacement of beds, mattresses, uniforms, books and other personal effects destroyed in the blaze before learners resume classes.
The incident once again brings into focus the persistent challenge of school fires in Kenya, particularly in boarding institutions.
