The Nyamira County Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening digital learning in Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres as part of efforts to improve foundational learning among young children.

Speaking on Thursday at Riomoro Primary School, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo said the county administration would continue supporting and sustaining digital learning programmes in ECDE institutions across the region.

The governor noted that digital learning plays a vital role in enhancing children’s understanding through interactive and engaging teaching methods. He added that the use of educational videos, songs, animations and games helps learners grasp basic literacy, numeracy and language skills more effectively compared to conventional teaching methods.

“Children tend to learn faster when education is presented in an engaging and enjoyable manner. Digital platforms make lessons more interactive, improving memory retention and comprehension,” said Nyaribo.

He added that the programme has also expanded access to quality learning materials for ECDE centres across the county, including those in remote rural areas. According to the governor, digital platforms enable schools to access standardized lessons, storybooks and educational content developed by experts, helping bridge the gap between well-equipped and under-resourced institutions.

Nyaribo further observed that exposing children to technology at an early age equips them with basic digital literacy skills that will be essential in higher levels of education and future careers.

“Introducing children to tablets and digital learning applications at an early stage builds confidence and familiarity with technology, preparing them for a digitally driven world,” he said.

The governor revealed that 210 ECDE centres in the county had already been equipped with digital learning facilities, expressing optimism that the remaining schools would benefit from the programme before the end of the current school term.

He also emphasized that digital learning supports teachers and parents by providing access to ready-made lesson plans, assessment tools and progress tracking systems, while enabling parents to reinforce classroom learning at home through approved educational content.

Nyaribo, who was accompanied by several Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and county officials, also commended the ongoing fortified porridge programme for ECDE learners, saying the initiative had contributed to increased enrolment and improved attendance in early learning centres.

He pledged that the county government would continue enhancing the feeding programme alongside digital learning initiatives to further improve the quality of early childhood education in Nyamira County.
