The government has cleared 272 public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to benefit from government scholarships and loans, opening a funding window for thousands of students pursuing technical and vocational courses.
The Ministry of Education, working with the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), released the list of institutions eligible for funding under the government’s higher education financing programme. The approved institutions include National Polytechnics, Technical Training Institutes (TTIs) and Technical and Vocational Colleges (TVCs) spread across the country.
The move is expected to ease the financial burden on students seeking practical and technical skills, while supporting the government’s push to increase enrolment in TVET programmes. In addition to the 272 public TVET institutions, the government has also approved about 153 specialised public colleges for HELB loan funding, including the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).

Students joining the approved institutions can apply for government scholarships and loans through the Higher Education Financing Portal, where applications and funding processes are handled online. The government has been implementing reforms to make higher education funding more targeted, with greater emphasis on supporting students based on their financial needs.
The inclusion of TVET institutions is also expected to strengthen access to skills training as Kenya seeks to develop a workforce equipped for industrialisation, technology and other emerging sectors. Prospective students and parents have been urged to check the official list of approved institutions before applying for funding to confirm whether their preferred college qualifies.
