Tengecha Boys High School in Kericho County has been closed indefinitely as management assesses the extent of damage caused by a fire that damaged a dormitory on Sunday evening, October 4.

The incident prompted the school administration to notify parents and guardians, assuring them that all students were safe and accounted for after the fire.

The administration did not immediately disclose the cause of the fire or provide details on the value of property destroyed, as the circumstances surrounding the incident were still being established.

Parents were initially informed that the school’s full Board of Management would meet to assess the situation and determine the way forward.

“Further communication will be issued tomorrow after the Full Board of Management meeting,” the school administration told parents in its Sunday communication.

Following an assessment with the Board of Management on Monday, education officials announced that the school would close indefinitely and students would be sent home.

The assessment concerns the extent of the damage, the welfare and accommodation of affected students and measures required before learning resumes.

Cause of fire remains unclear

The incident has also raised concerns over fire safety and preparedness at the school, with parents expected to seek more information on what caused the blaze and measures being taken to prevent a recurrence.

The school had urged parents and guardians to remain calm and await official communication as management handled the aftermath of the fire.
