State assures smooth transition as national assessments conclude; KCSE written exams set for Monday

CS Ogamba says this week's national assessments went smoothly as 1,048,355 candidates prepare to start the KCSE written papers on Monday, November 2, 2026.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba says this week's national assessments went well across the country, as more than one million candidates prepare to start the main Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) written examinations on Monday, November 2, 2026.
Speaking after supervising the opening of the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) examination container at the Sotik Deputy County Commissioner's office in Bomet County this morning, Mr Ogamba reviewed the week's progress and the state's readiness to administer the KCSE.
He said more than 2.5 million learners sat the various national assessment papers during the week.
The Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) ended on Wednesday, October 28, while the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) and the Kenya Pre-Vocational Level Education Assessment (KPLEA) ended on Thursday. The Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) ends today.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, the exercise progressed smoothly nationwide despite isolated operational challenges. These included localised adverse weather, minor administrative discrepancies and cases of candidates who needed medical attention.

He said that through joint efforts by the Ministry of Education, KNEC, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, and security agencies, all affected candidates were supported to sit their papers.
Mr Ogamba said the end of the KJSEA marks an important step for Grade 9 learners moving to Senior School under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system in January 2027.
He assured parents and guardians that placement into Senior School will be transparent and fair, and guided strictly by academic performance, individual interests and pathway selections.
With attention now on the KCSE, 1,048,355 registered candidates are set to begin their main written papers after the oral, practical and low-candidature tests end today.

The CS called for integrity, diligence and accountability among examination managers, supervisors, invigilators and field officers. He directed that special attention be given to vulnerable candidates, including those with special needs, those in medical facilities and those in flood-prone or weather-disrupted areas.

He also commended KNEC, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), multi-agency security teams, centre managers and healthcare staff for their work in protecting the credibility and security of the examinations.
