Uriri Constituency MP Mark Nyamita has reiterated his commitment to improving school infrastructure to create an enabling learning environment in the constituency.
He was speaking on Monday when he commissioned a new administration block at Oyani Mixed Secondary School in North Kanyamkago Ward.
The MP said quality education cannot be achieved in dilapidated structures and that his office has prioritised the modernisation of schools through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to give learners dignity and motivation.
"When we improve infrastructure, we improve performance. A child who learns in a decent classroom with a proper laboratory and a good staffroom where teachers can prepare well will automatically be inspired to work hard," he said.
The newly commissioned administration block at Oyani Mixed Secondary School comprises a principal's office, deputy principal's office, a staffroom capable of accommodating 20 teachers, a boardroom and a strongroom for the safe storage of examination materials.
The block was constructed at a cost of Sh4.2 million from NG-CDF funds.
The MP noted that the school, which was established in 1986 by the local community and the Catholic Church to reduce the long distances students were walking to Uriri and Bware secondary schools, had long been operating from an old mud-walled office that was leaking and congested.
School seeks reliable electricity connection
Board of Management Chairman Joseph Nyamolo thanked the MP's office for providing solar panels to the school to support learning activities but said the power supply was unreliable, especially during cloudy weather.
He called for the school's connection to the national electricity grid.

"The solar panels have really helped us for evening preps and powering computers, but when it is cloudy we are forced to end classes early. We are requesting that you help us get connected to Kenya Power for stable electricity," Nyamolo said.
In response, the MP promised to lobby Kenya Power and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation to fast-track the school's electricity connection to support computer-based learning and science practicals.
Sh68 million invested in school infrastructure
Nyamita added that his office had, in the last two financial years, disbursed over Sh68 million for infrastructure development across the constituency, including the construction of 12 new classrooms at Oyani, Arambe and Korondo secondary schools, the renovation of eight science laboratories and the issuance of bursaries worth Sh32 million to needy students.
The MP also announced that Oyani Mixed Secondary School would benefit from an additional Sh2.5 million for the completion of a perimeter wall and equipping of the school library to curb external interference and improve reading culture.
School Principal Jane Atieno Ochieng thanked the MP, saying the school's enrolment had grown from 180 students in 2018 to 467 currently, leading to congestion in the former small office, which also served as a counselling room.
The MP urged students to maintain discipline and work hard to justify the heavy investment being made in their school.
He also pledged a 51-seater bus for the school in the next financial year to facilitate academic trips.
