The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Vihiga County Branch, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), demanding full compliance with labour laws or facing a widespread boycott of national examination duties.
In a memo dated October 12, 2026, issued by the Office of the Executive Secretary, the union directed all its members to withdraw their services from KNEC assignments unless the examination body addresses statutory grievances under the Employment Act.
According to the statement signed by KUPPET Vihiga Executive Secretary Charles Otiende Aginda, the union is demanding that KNEC comply with several specific provisions of the Employment Act, including Part 2 (Sections 5, 6, 7), Part 3 (Sections 7, 8, 9), Part 4 (Section 17), Part 5 (Sections 26, 27, 31, 32, 33, 34), Part 9 (Sections 74, 75), and Part 12 (Section 87).
The union leadership cited constitutional guarantees under Article 41(2) and Article 41(4) on fair labour practices, as well as provisions within the union's own constitution, to justify the planned industrial action.(Education News Kenya — https://educationnews.co.ke/news/kuppet-threatens-examination-boycott-over-employment-law-violation)
KUPPET Vihiga warned that if KNEC fails to resolve the grievances within the seven days, teachers across the county will boycott all council activities and assemble at the Ministry of Education County Director's offices in Mbale Town on November 2, 2026, from 6 am for an indefinite sit-in until their demands are met.
The directive has been copied to the KUPPET General Secretary, the Secretary of the County Education Board, and the KNEC Chief Executive Officer, and threatens to cause major disruptions to the administration and supervision of national examinations in Vihiga County.
