Teachers involved in administering the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations in Vihiga County have raised concerns over low allowances and delays in payments.

The concerns have prompted KUPPET to seek urgent discussions with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

KUPPET Vihiga Branch Executive Secretary Charles Otiende said the union had been expecting KNEC to respond to issues raised by teachers before the commencement of the examinations.

However, he said the anticipated feedback had not been received despite teachers making themselves available for engagement.

“We had availed ourselves this morning hoping to get feedback from KNEC, as teachers had indicated they would not engage in examination duties without their concerns being addressed. However, we received no feedback,” Otiende said.

He explained that teachers had agreed to continue with their examination duties but wanted the union's leadership to sustain negotiations with KNEC until their grievances were resolved.
Delayed allowances raise concerns
The union official said payment delays were a recurring problem, pointing out that teachers who participated in last year's examination administration waited approximately nine months to receive their allowances.

Otiende also faulted the financial arrangement that leaves schools to cater for teachers' welfare during the examination period, saying some institutions lacked sufficient resources.

He noted that schools receiving low capitation were particularly affected, making it difficult for them to adequately support teachers carrying out examination responsibilities.

“We will continue consulting with KNEC and would like to ask the Chief Executive Officer to convene an urgent meeting to discuss and resolve the issues teachers have raised over time,” he said.

Otiende said approximately 400 teachers were involved in administering KCSE examinations in Vihiga County.

They include centre managers, deputy centre managers and supervisors, who play key roles in overseeing the national examination exercise.

KUPPET says it will continue pressing KNEC to address the payment concerns through dialogue and consultations.
