Children in Kirigiti are set to benefit from improved access to primary education following plans to establish a school in the area, ending years of dependence on institutions located outside their neighbourhood.
Kiambu Town MP Machua Waithaka said preparations had been finalised for the launch of Kirigiti Primary School on Wednesday, October 14, in what he described as a major step towards addressing a longstanding infrastructure gap in the constituency.
For years, families in Kirigiti have had to contend with the absence of a primary school in their locality, compelling learners to travel about two kilometres to attend classes at Kiuu River, Kiambu or Riabai primary schools.
The proposed institution is expected to ease the burden on pupils and parents by bringing basic education closer to homes and reducing the daily journeys children make in pursuit of learning.
Waithaka said the project would respond to a longstanding need among residents, who have had to rely on neighbouring areas for access to primary education.
The school is expected to improve convenience for families while strengthening the provision of essential public services in a community that has lacked its own primary learning facility.
Beyond education, the project is also expected to generate employment opportunities for residents during the construction phase.
Waithaka said he had directed the contractor to give priority to local people when recruiting workers, ensuring that the community secures a share of the economic benefits arising from the development.
The move is intended to ensure that the project benefits residents not only through the eventual provision of a school but also through temporary jobs created during construction.
Government department to undertake construction
The construction work will be undertaken by the State Department for Housing and Urban Planning through its Corporate Social Responsibility programme in Kiambu Constituency.
The initiative highlights the potential role of government agencies in supporting community infrastructure projects that address local needs beyond their immediate administrative responsibilities.

For parents in Kirigiti, the proposed school offers the prospect of shorter school journeys for their children and easier access to primary education within the neighbourhood.
Its establishment is also expected to provide families with an additional option when choosing schools for their children, while potentially easing pressure on neighbouring institutions.
The launch marks an important milestone in efforts to close the education infrastructure gap in Kirigiti. However, the benefits residents anticipate will ultimately depend on the progress of construction, the provision of essential learning facilities and the school's readiness to admit pupils.
Residents will be looking to the project to deliver a functional institution that can serve present and future generations as the area continues to develop.
