Mukumu Girls to reopen in phases as from May 2

Mukumu Girls

Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School will reopen in phases starting on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

A caretaker committee running the institution said yesterday that the students, teachers, workers and parents will undergo a rigorous guiding and counseling session before studies resume.

The committee said the school would not manage to handle all the 2,028 learners if they reported on the same day, prompting the decision to allow reopening in phases.

The Ministry of Education has also embarked on drilling of another borehole at the school which is expected to be ready for use by May 2.

The new Principal, Jane Mmbone, said today that they were putting all mechanisms in place to ensure the reopening was seamless.

“We are working round the clock to make sure everything is set well before the reopening date,” she said.

She said thorough cleanliness was ongoing as well.

Shinyalu MP, Fred Ikana, said he would be at hand to receive the learners on the reopening date.

“Mukumu Girls is one of our top schools in this constituency and we shall do whatever it takes to restore normalcy and prepare our girls, especially those in Form Four getting ready for the national examinations,” he added.

The institution was shut down indefinitely following an outbreak of a mysterious disease that claimed the lives of a teacher and three students.

Several other students are still hospitalized.

The crisis led to the transfer of the Principal Fridah Ndolo and the dissolution of the entire Board of Management.
