The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has officially opened the registration of Grade 10 learners on its Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal, marking a key step in the implementation of School-Based Assessments (SBA) under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.

In a notice issued to principals, KNEC announced that all registered senior school assessment centres have been enabled to register Grade 10 learners through the CBA portal.

The exercise follows the successful registration of Senior School assessment centres conducted earlier this year.

According to the council, principals are required to access the portal through the official CBA platform and use the new universal centre code generated during the Senior School registration process as both the username and password.

Schools are then expected to upload and register all eligible Grade 10 learners for assessment purposes.

KNEC has set July 30, 2026, as the deadline for the registration exercise and urged school heads to complete the process within the stipulated timeline to avoid inconveniences that could affect learners’ participation in future assessments.

The registration is a crucial milestone in the rollout of Senior School assessments under the Competency-Based Curriculum, which places greater emphasis on continuous assessment and the development of practical competencies rather than relying solely on end-of-cycle examinations.

Education stakeholders have been advised to ensure the accuracy of learner information entered into the system, as the data will form part of learners’ assessment records throughout their Senior School education.

KNEC has also encouraged schools experiencing challenges with registration to seek assistance through their respective sub-county directors of education or contact the council directly for support.

The opening of the registration portal comes as Kenya continues to transition fully into the Competency-Based Education framework, with the pioneer grade 10 cohort expected to undergo school-based assessments that will contribute significantly to their overall academic evaluation and progression within the Senior School pathway.
