Education stakeholders, children, community members and leaders gathered at Kisapuk Community Centre Grounds in Ololilai Sub County yesterday to celebrate International Literacy Day, an event organised by Grassroot Nest for Innovation and Change (GRiC) Africa to promote a culture of reading and learning among children and the wider community.
Speaking at the event, Ololilai Sub County’s Quality and Standards Assurance Officer, Salat Mohammed, urged parents to make deliberate efforts to support their children’s literacy at home, stressing that learning should not be confined to the classroom.
Kisapuk Primary and Junior School headteacher, Mr Stanley Letuya, echoed this call, noting that literacy extends beyond reading and writing to give learners the knowledge and confidence to participate actively in society. He appealed to teachers, parents, community leaders and partners to continue working together to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn.
The event aimed to highlight the role of families and the wider community in creating an environment that supports learners beyond school hours, while also strengthening the relationship between schools and their surrounding communities.

Children took part in a range of activities throughout the day, including a spelling bee, parent-led storytelling sessions, and lively debates that added energy and excitement to the celebration.
Held under the theme “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity,” the event emphasised reading and writing as foundational to children’s confidence, engagement and long-term success, rather than just academic obligations.
The event concluded with GRiC Africa’s International Literacy Day Book Drive.
