Grade 9 learners seeking admission to senior secondary schools will have fewer institutions to choose from, following a decision by the Ministry of Education (MoE) to reduce the number of school choices from 12 to eight.
The change takes effect as the Ministry officially opens the Grade 10 school selection portal, setting the stage for a five-day exercise targeting about 1.2 million Grade 9 learners across the country. The selection exercise, which opened on Monday, allows learners to identify and select senior schools where they wish to pursue their Grade 10 studies under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.
Under the revised arrangement, each learner will be required to select a maximum of eight senior schools, down from the previous 12 options. The reduction is expected to streamline the placement process while encouraging learners to make more focused choices based on their preferred pathways, schools and available opportunities. Learners are expected to consider their areas of interest, academic strengths, preferred senior school pathways and the subjects offered by different institutions before submitting their choices.
The Grade 10 transition marks a significant stage in the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), with learners moving into senior school, where they will pursue specialised pathways aligned with their abilities, talents and career aspirations.

The Ministry has urged learners, parents and guardians to carefully review the available options before making their final selections. Schools and teachers have also been encouraged to guide learners through the process to ensure that their choices reflect their interests and future career goals.
The five-day selection exercise is expected to attract participation from approximately 1.2 million Grade 9 learners, making it one of the largest transitions under the new education system. The Ministry will subsequently use the submitted choices and other placement criteria to determine the senior schools where learners will report for Grade 10.
