Form Four students from HGM Ting’ang’a Secondary School in Kiambu Constituency have gained valuable insight into Kenya’s legislative process following an educational visit to Parliament Buildings, a programme that continues to enhance civic education among learners in public schools.

The visit forms part of a long-standing initiative that has seen schools from Kiambu tour the National Assembly to deepen students’ understanding of governance, democracy, and the role of Parliament in shaping national development.

During the visit, the students, accompanied by their teachers and several parents, observed parliamentary proceedings from the Speaker’s Gallery, giving them a rare opportunity to witness lawmakers debate and deliberate on national issues firsthand.

Kiambu Member of Parliament (MP) Machua Waithaka said he was pleased to host the learners and emphasized the importance of exposing young people to the workings of the country’s democratic institutions.

“I was delighted to host Form Four students, teachers, and several parents from HGM Ting’ang’a Secondary School at Parliament Buildings, where they had the opportunity to follow the afternoon sitting from the Speaker’s Gallery,” said Waithaka.

He noted that such educational visits play a critical role in helping students understand how debates are conducted and how laws are formulated and passed in the National Assembly.

“This educational visit is important as it exposes students to the workings of Parliament and enables them to gain a better understanding of how debates and legislative processes are conducted in the National Assembly. Such experiences help broaden their perspectives, inspire civic responsibility, and complement their classroom learning,” he said.

The legislator expressed confidence that the knowledge and experiences gained during the visit would positively influence the students’ future ambitions and academic pursuits.

“I am confident that the lessons and insights gained from this visit will go a long way in shaping their future aspirations, enhancing their academic pursuits, and preparing them to become informed and responsible citizens,” he added.

Education stakeholders have increasingly emphasized the importance of experiential learning, arguing that exposing students to institutions of governance helps bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical understanding of citizenship.

The National Assembly continues to encourage educational visits by schools across the country as part of its public outreach and civic education efforts. Schools wishing to bring learners aged between six and 18 years to Parliament are welcome to make arrangements through their respective Members of Parliament or by contacting the Clerk of the National Assembly.

Institutions planning such visits are required to indicate the name of the school, the proposed date of the visit, the number of students, and the accompanying staff members.

Education experts say such engagements not only enhance learners’ understanding of democratic governance but also inspire future leaders by allowing them to observe decision-making processes at the highest levels of government.

For the students of HGM Ting’ang’a Secondary School, the visit offered more than just a tour of Parliament—it provided a practical lesson in democracy, leadership, and civic responsibility, equipping them with knowledge that will remain relevant long after they complete their studies.
