KCSE Candidate Commits Suicide Homa-Bay County

A KCSE candidate at Kibuon Secondary School in Nyatike constituency, Migori County allegedly committed suicide by jumping into waters of River Kuja, South Kanyikela location in Ndhiwa constituency to avoid an attack from his brothers. The candidate identified as Erick Okinyi 20 years jumped into the river while trying to escape the wrath of his brothers who are said to have been accosting him after him after he disappeared with the father’s motorbike and spoilt it before abandoning it at the nearby trading centre.

It is believed the candidate committed suicide for fear that he would be punished for riding his father’s motorbike without permission. The deceased reportedly left home in North Kanyamkago, Uriri constituency with the motorbike belonging to his father without permission.

According to his father George Ouma, the deceased brothers followed him after he left with the motorbike thinking he (Okinyi) had intention of selling it but upon reaching Riat Trading centre in Ndhiwa constituency they saw him and when they tried to reach him, he suddenly took off towards the River Kuja and jumped into the water.

The father said that the deceased brothers were only concerned with the manner he left home with the motorbike without informing them and they were surprised to find the motorbike abandoned at a garage within Riat centre after he realized his brothers were following him. South Kanyikela Location chief Moses Ongong’a confirmed the incident saying the search operation of the body is ongoing.
