Kaimosi Friends University, (KAFU) nursing students yesterday convened free community screening outreach to hundreds of residents in Shaviringa village, Shiru Ward, in Vihiga County.
The day-long program provided free screenings for diabetes, high blood pressure, cancers, and HIV, alongside public health education on water safety, sanitation, and disease prevention.
Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic, Student Affairs and Research, Prof. Fred Amimo, commended the initiative, describing it as “a true reflection of classwork transforming society.” He said the exercise demonstrated the university’s commitment to extending its resources beyond campus.
Faculty members emphasized prevention as the most effective tool against illness. “Health is wealth and prevention is the first medicine,” said Dr. Anne Asiko, urging villagers to embrace clean water practices and regular checkups.

Many locals welcomed the services, noting that access to specialized screening is often difficult in rural areas adding that the program offered both reassurance and practical tools to improve their health.
The outreach also served as a training ground for student nurses, who gained hands-on experience while supporting local families. University officials said such activities help bridge the gap between academic instruction and real-world application.
The event underscored KAFU’s philosophy of learning through service. The university has pledged to continue partnering with communities in Vihiga County and beyond to strengthen healthcare delivery and awareness.
