Joseph Milimo: A parent on mission to educate his children from charcoal

Joseph Milimo, a resident of Ng’eng’e village, Kwanza Sub -County in Trans Nzoia County, is a parent on a mission to see his children get the best of the education which he was not lucky to get.

“Myself I did not go far in terms of education, but I would like to see all my children get quality education for better life.” Milimo said.

Being a shrewd and ambitious charcoal business man, Milimo admitted that even though the business is the only way out for his family; the tough condition surrounding the Arid and Semi-Arid zone of North Pokot Sub County where he gets his charcoal has not favoured him.

Speaking to Education News, the tough charcoal dealer alluded that for close to 10yrs he has been in charcoal business enduring many challenges including sleeping on the road side due to mechanical problems on his motorbike, but  despite all that he has  never given up because he values education for his children.

The determined parent of three, added that he always travel over 400 kilometres to collect the charcoal and distribute to various sellers in the interior part of North Pokot.

“Although I have encountered so many challenges in this business, I’m proud that my first born child graduated from NYS in December last year as an accountant. My Second born is at the Kitale National Polytechnic pursuing an engineering course and my last born is a form four candidate.

All their fees are through my small business of charcoal selling,” said a fatigued Milimo.

He added that he has bought two dairy cows, constructed a permanent house for the family, and additional two permanent rental rooms, which give his family a small income at the end of each month.
