High school student dies days after winning Sh200,000 sports bet

Police in Kitui County are investigating the death of a 17 year old Syengo Nyamai, a Form Two student from Mavindini Day Mixed Secondary School, whose life was cut short after being attacked by unknown assailants, few days after winning Sh 200,000 lottery from a sports betting firm.

The lifeless body of the deceased was found dumped in a thicket a few kilometers from his home in Maliku area in Katulani Sub County after going missing for six days.

Syengo`s body was found with the eyes gouged out on Saturday, March 4th  and at the crime scene there were motorcycle tire tracks which suggests that he might have been killed elsewhere and his body ferried  and dumped in the area.

Besides his eyes being gouged out, his right hand was broken and there were injuries on the head; this is according to the report of post- mortem done at the Kitui County Referral Hospital.

He was last seen on February 27 with his two close friends who at the moment are being detained by the police officers handling the case.

The deceased is reported to have won the sum two weeks ago when he gambled a football match in 2023 Carabao match finals between Manchester United and Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium where Manchester United emerged victorious.

Syengo never disclosed to the family members about the money he had won according to his elder brother Munyithya Nyamai as he had even pledged to his mother to transfer to a boarding school and fuel part of his school fees.
