Busia Governor Dr Paul Otuoma on Saturday led academicians, family members, friends and local leaders in paying tribute to the late Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) lecturer, Dr Regina Nabwire, during her emotional send-off in Bupala Village, Nangina Ward, Busia County.
Dr Nabwire, 49, succumbed to malignant breast cancer and was remembered as an accomplished scholar whose contribution to academia and the community touched many lives.
At the time of her death, she was a lecturer in the Department of Pure and Applied Sciences at MMUST. She also previously served as Chairperson of the Board of Management of Nangina Girls National School.
The late scholar held a PhD in Natural Products Chemistry and was eulogised as a brilliant academic who dedicated her career to advancing knowledge and contributing to the education sector.
Beyond her academic credentials, mourners described Dr Nabwire as a loving wife, devoted mother, loyal friend and compassionate member of the community.
She was the wife of Dr Michael Makokha Odera and is survived by her daughter, Latricia.
Governor Otuoma described Dr Nabwire as an extraordinary woman whose intellectual contribution and personal qualities had left an enduring legacy.
The send-off brought together relatives, friends, colleagues and leaders, who shared memories of the late lecturer and reflected on her life, achievements and impact on those around her.
Otuoma calls for political tolerance
During the ceremony, Governor Otuoma also called on leaders to embrace political tolerance, respect divergent views and uphold democratic principles.
He said Busia’s partnership with the National Government had contributed to major development initiatives, including road infrastructure, the Smart City programme, the Industrial Park and Export Processing Zone (EPZ) at Nasewa and affordable housing.
Otuoma said political differences should not derail development, urging leaders to remain focused on improving the lives of residents.

He extended his condolences to Dr Makokha, Latricia, relatives, friends, colleagues and the entire family, saying Dr Nabwire’s legacy would continue to live on through the people she inspired and served.
