Former students of Kowidi Mixed Secondary School in Migori County have disowned their KCSE results as fake and do not reflect their abilities.
All of the 30 students who sat the exam scored grade E in Maths, and the average mean was D Plain.
“It is not possible that all of us are incapable of passing Mathematics,” Sheilla Akinyi, one of the affected students, said.
The school principal Paul Okombo said his office has lodged a complaint to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to look into the matter.
“We passed through our County Director of Education (CDE) and hope we shall be heard,” he said.
Contacted, the CDE Jacob Onyiego said many former students have visited his office for clarification, claiming that their parents were tormenting them for having disgraced their families by scoring such rock-bottom grades.
Onyiego appealed to parents to be patient with their children as they come to terms with the shock of failure, asking the complainants themselves to remain optimistic and think of how they can reconstruct their lives.
“I asked them to take other decisions, like joining local TVETs or going back to class to give it another shot,” he said.
