Koderobara Boys High School in Rongo Sub-county, Migori County, has been closed indefinitely after a students strike turned violent, leading to the destruction of school property, including the burning of two dormitories.
The chaos erupted after a mobile phone belonging to a Form Four student was confiscated by a prefect, sparking outrage and protests among the learners.
The unrest quickly escalated, resulting in the torching of a dormitory, vandalism of the administration block, and the suspension of all academic activities. Police officers were called in to restore order, and 15 students have since been arrested to assist with investigations.
According to Migori County Director of Education, Jacob Onyiego, the root cause of the unrest involving the school’s 1,150 students has yet to be fully established. However, he assured parents that no student was injured during the incident.
“We conducted a head count to ensure all boys were accounted for and safe before releasing them to go home,” he said. “Investigations are ongoing, and those found culpable will face the law for destroying school property.”

Mr. Onyiego urged parents to remain calm as they await the Board of Management’s decision on when the school will be reopened. He also emphasized that the ministry takes matters of student safety and discipline seriously, and warned that legal consequences would follow for any student proven to have played a role in the destruction.
The incident has reignited conversations around the rising cases of student unrest in secondary schools, prompting calls for more robust conflict resolution, mental health support, and communication mechanisms within school environments.
