Migori County Director of Education Jacob Onyiego has lauded Senye SDA Mixed Secondary School in Nyatike South Sub‑county for maintaining a steady upward trajectory in KCSE results over the last four years. He said the county will continue to encourage and support innovative principals and staff who show zeal in promoting education growth and success for learners.

Onyiego noted that several little‑known schools in Migori posted positive results in the 2025 KCSE examinations, attributing the progress to equitable distribution of learning resources that created a level playing ground. “We held many education consultative and sensitisation meetings with teachers and parents to bring them in the common course of preparing the candidates with love and assurance,” he said. He mentioned Abwao, which attained a mean of 6.4, Pehill with 6.5, Tuku Jowi at 6.5, and Sigira at 6.1.

Nyatike South Sub‑county Director of Education Ombaso Oketch echoed the remarks when he visited Senye to witness its consistent results. He said the school has shown an upward trend since 2023, when it rose from a mean of 5.6 and sent 14 students directly to university. In 2024, the mean improved to 6.1 with 21 direct entries, and in 2025, the school achieved 6.7, sending 35 students with a C+ and above to university.

Principal Evans Magembe said he overcame challenges linked to delocalization when he was transferred from his home area, choosing instead to organize his staff for academic success. “We held several departmental meetings in the school and identified our weaknesses and strengths, then embraced teamwork to build the school’s tradition of academic excellence,” he said.

Magembe added that retaining learners required collaboration with local administration to discourage teenage pregnancies and early marriages, while encouraging young mothers to return to school rather than indulge in vices with fishermen along Lake Victoria. He recalled saving a girl four years ago from dropping out to marry early. He thanked Board of Management chairperson Madam Dola Nyanja and deputy Paul Sati for accompanying him to villages to follow up on straying girls.

Their efforts saw one teenage mother give birth during her Biology practical paper in last year’s KCSE. When Education News visited her home, she proudly displayed her B‑ result slip while caring for her two‑month‑old baby boy. The jubilant Phocy Akinyi Lucas said she hopes to pursue nursing to fulfill her dream of serving in the health sector.

The school chairperson also thanked President William Ruto and area MP Tom Odege for delivering a school bus last month, saying it will greatly assist in transporting students and staff for academic tours. He assured parents of learner safety in both boarding and day wings, citing cooperation with the area chief, assistants, and Nyumba Kumi groups.

Located near the border, the school has cautioned learners against drug and substance abuse and urged them to embrace the institution’s spiritual life for success in present and future endeavours.
